How Viltra provided a unique complex wastewater treatment solution for a global leader in the food distribution industry based in Northern Ireland.
Client Overview
Sysco is a global leader in selling, marketing, and distributing food and non-food products to restaurants, healthcare and educational facilities, hotels, and other customers worldwide. At their facility in Antrim, Northern Ireland, Sysco faced the need for a reliable on-site wastewater treatment system, as the site had no access to a mains sewage connection.
Operating to high international standards, Sysco required a solution that could ensure compliance with all applicable environmental regulations while maintaining the efficiency and sustainability of their operations.
Challenges
The project posed several unique challenges. Sysco’s site generated two distinct wastewater streams: recycled effluent from an on-site lorry wash and foul waste from the main building. Each of these streams had different treatment requirements but ultimately needed to be managed within a single, integrated solution. Additionally, the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) imposed strict discharge parameters because of heightened concerns about pollution entering Lough Neagh, especially following blue-green algae blooms in the area.
Limited access to mains sewage infrastructure, combined with the environmentally sensitive receiving environment, demanded a robust, adaptable, and future-proof wastewater treatment system capable of consistently meeting strict discharge standards for BOD, suspended solids, and ammonia.
Our Solution
Viltra designed, delivered, and commissioned a comprehensive bespoke wastewater treatment solution tailored to Sysco’s site-specific needs:
• A custom-built plant room container, serving as the control hub of the entire system
• Separate pumping systems to manage the recycled lorry wash effluent and foul wastewater, feeding into a combined treatment plant
• Controls and aeration blowers integrated within the container, with capacity for chemical and nutrient dosing as required
• Progressive cavity feed pumps to ensure consistent flow through the system
• Precision flow meters for accurate monitoring and compliance reporting
• A drip field pumping station connected to a 1,200 m² raised percolation area with drip dispersal tubing
Results
The final treated effluent is then pumped to the drip field, with the entire system designed to fully comply with NIEA discharge limits for BOD, suspended solids, and ammonia.
This innovative, site-specific solution ensures that Sysco can operate sustainably, protecting the local environment while continuing to provide high-quality service to its customers. Viltra’s collaborative approach, technical expertise, and commitment to environmental compliance were key to the successful delivery of this project.
