Firkin Point is a beautiful spot to stop and relax on the western shores of Loch Lomond. Sticking out into the largest loch in Great Britain, it is surrounded by woodland and wildlife. Viltra is proud to have designed a bespoke sewage treatment solution on the side of Loch Lomond for this beauty spot popular with visitors and campers.

Client Overview

Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park encompasses around 720 sq miles (1,865 sq km) of some of the finest scenery in Scotland and is split into four distinct areas. It is a place of contrasts, from rolling lowland landscapes in the south to high mountains in the north, and has many lochs and rivers, forests and woodlands. It is also a living, working landscape that has been influenced by people for generations and is visited and enjoyed by many for its recreational value. The Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park became fully operational on 19 July 2002 and was officially opened by Princess Anne on 24 July 2002.

Firkin Point can be found on the west bank of Loch Lomond about halfway between Inverbeg and Tarbet. It's possible to go for three miles north or south on a level surfaced path. It's a lovely lochside route with stunning views of Loch Lomond.

Firkin Point is a popular spot for day-trippers and travellers stopping off on their north and south journeys. The Park Authority provides public toilet facilities, which are well maintained and used. However, the existing drainage system of a septic tank and a pump to a soakaway were failing due to the ground conditions at the soakaway. As a result, the Park Authority was incurring unsustainable costs in maintaining the system.

Our Solution

Viltra designed a bespoke sewage treatment solution to discharge to a nearby watercourse with a high level of ammonia treatment and obtained SEPA approval. In addition, Viltra obtained planning and building warrant approval. Our modular concrete cased, Submerged Aerated Filter (SAF) system was designed in-house, manufactured and installed by Viltra. The plant was installed in March 2020 in horrendous weather conditions but was completed prior to the deadline.
