Client Overview
Once home to the famous T in the Park music festival, Balado Airfield is still a very busy corner of Perthshire. Balado is a centrally located airfield, catering for increasing flights by light and microlight aircraft. Improvements are being made to the buildings including to the hangers and control tower.
Challenges
Located near Loch Leven at Kinross, the water environment is particularly sensitive to phosphorus produced from wastewater. Coupled with the high level of groundwater found on site, a mound soakaway had been initially proposed to disperse the effluent on the ground. Located on low lying, flat ground, the client did not want to have a mound on the airfield that would have to be maintained. To combat this prospect, Viltra enforced innovative designs, delivering a bespoke flush system, preserving the air-fields equilibrium.
Our Solution
Viltra designed a bespoke sewage treatment solution to deal with both the phosphorus reduction and a drip infiltration system that, under pressure, emits treated effluent direct into the topsoil. This unique product provides the client with a high level of treatment as well as maintaining the level topography characteristic of the site.
